Sidney sometimes gets out of bed after we have put him to bed. He will get up for various reasons, to use the bathroom, to open the bedroom door because he likes it ajar, and to remind us to give him medicine (like for his asthma). Thursday night this week, I put him to bed. Around 9:15pm I hear him crying. I go in and his bedside lamp is on and he's clutching his right hand. He had burned it when he touched the lightbulb in the lamp on his bedside table. That lamp has been there since he was two years-old, which is when we got him his big boy bed. He had never messed with it or even turned it on.
Roger came running up from downstairs and when I was leaving to go get some ice, he noticed that one of Sidney's books, "One Little Monster, " was in Sidney's bed. He had turned on the lamp to read in bed!
I put some ice in a towel and he kept his hand on it. He said his hand really hurt. I asked him why he touched the lightbulb and he said, "because I did," That's his usual reply when you ask him a question like that. I know he was just curious. I laid with him for an hour then Roger relieved me. Sidney eventually fell asleep and Roger slept with him to make sure he was okay.
Thursday night, Roger gave Sidney some ibuprofen to help with the pain and his Hulk ice pack.
In the morning, he didn't complain about his hand at first. But during breakfast he asked if he could ice it. I gave him a cold pack to ice his hand.
When I picked up Sidney and Cleo from daycare on Friday I checked out his hand. The burn is blistered now but doesn't hurt him. It's around the size of a nickel and it's on the pad of his palm right below his right index finger.
Sidney is clearly going to be more of a challenge than Cleo was when she was his age. She has always had a healthy fear of authority. Sidney seems to thrive on pushing boundaries and testing limits.
For example, a week and a half ago after dinner, Cleo and I were doing homework at the red homework table. Sidney was finishing up his dessert and Roger was tidying up the kitchen. Roger grabbed Sidney's napkin to toss it away. He then asked Sidney why there were three bites of pork chop in the napkin. Sidney replied, "It don't taste good." He had eaten all of his other food and at least 12 bites of pork chop (Roger cuts it into bite size pieces). Roger and I were both very upset and disappointed in Sidney for his duplicity.
As punishment, Sidney was not allowed to play with his trains or other toys on Thursday after school. Instead of playing, he sat at the homework table and worked in his workbooks that Roger and I have gotten both of them to help them with math and writing. He was so happy to come off punishment on Friday and was again allowed to play with his trains.
One day this week Sidney had cut up fried chicken for dinner - he loves it. During dinner, Sidney announced that he was not going to hide any of the pieces in his napkin. We commended him for his good sense.
Sidney likes to play DJ on the little CD/radio in the kids' playroom. Roger pulled out some of his CDs so they could have dance parties. They don't really have dance parties, Sidney just puts in CDs, plays one song, then switches the CD. He discovered Michael Jackson's Bad and loves the title track. He plays it over and over and does an homage to Michael Jackson. The thing is, I don't think he has really seen much of Michael Jackson performing (we need to show him some videos online). The MJ moves he's doing are from an A.N.T. Farm episode, that's a show on Disney Channel. Finesse Mitchell, he used to be on Saturday Night Live, pretends to be Michael Jackson in one of the character's dreams. I have written about the episode in an earlier text because Sidney calls it "Church Music." There's a church music segment when the dreaming character is cast as an early Aretha Franklin.
So, Sidney imitates Finesse Mitchell's impersonation of Michael Jackson. Finesse Mitchell's impersonation is spot on and he has clearly watched Michael Jackson a lot. I have watched the episode many times and always laugh a lot; partly because of the MJ segment. Sidney's routine is hilarious and awesome. I am going to video him and upload it. It is something that must be shared. One of the funniest things is Sidney trying to sing along. At first he would say, "I'm bash, I'm bash, I'm booya booya bash." We corrected him and told him that MJ is saying, "I'm bad." Cleo was all, "There's no such thing as 'I'm bash', Sidney." So now he sings, "I'm bad, I'm bad, I'm booya booya bad."
I put Cleo to bed Wednesday night this week. Sometimes we chat a little before I sing her the 4 silly songs that I have been singing to her for a long time. She said that she wished she was rich. I initially was concerned because that seemed like such a grown-up wish. I asked her why and she said that so she could buy pencils. I reminded her that we have a lot of pencils already. She said, "No, sharpened ones." I conceded that some of our pencils could use some sharpening and we could do that with one of the many pencil sharpeners we have around the house. She said that what she really wanted was a little square portable pencil sharpener like the one that Josiah has. He's a little boy in Cleo's class. Josiah is one of the smart kids in her class so they are in the same breakout groups during the day. I told her the next time we are at Target, she can point out the pencil sharpener that she wants and we will get it for her. She was happy.
There's not too much on the agenda this weekend. Cleo's acting class is at 10am today. It's Roger's turn to take them. I will go to the gym. I will also do P90X with the kids again. Cleo said she wanted to do it with me. We need to get Cleo shoes for her May 17 graduation from kindergarten. It's at 9am at her school. We have her white dress from her pre-K graduation last year that still fits her. We may need to get her white dress shoes. The information from the school says conflicting things about the color of the shoes, one week it's white and one week it's black. We have black ones but need to find white ones. if that's what she has to wear
I will take pictures of the kids and post them soon.
Have a great week!
