Saturday, May 5, we woke up and hung around the house until Sidney’s 11:45am check up with his pediatrician. Cleo put on her Rapunzel dress and Sidney tried on my glasses.
It was a follow-up on his asthma diagnosis. We also asked his doctor about Sidney’s strong skin reactions to mosquito bites. He also has been limping since the first week of April. She said that his asthma is under control and that we can discontinue the pulmicort in a week but we need to continue the 2 times a day nebulizer with albuterol.
Sidney’s doctor said that some people react stronger to mosquito bites. She said we can treat his mosquito bites with hydrocortisone ointment. She did a full exam of his legs and had no suggestion for why he was limping. Last week, his limp was not pronounced while walking but you could still notice it when he ran. She said to watch it for the next two weeks and if it’s still noticeable we can think about x-rays.
We waited a long time to see the doctor – over an hour – so we left the doctor office around 1:30pm. We grabbed the kids Happy Meals and headed home. Sidney had 2 bites of his cheeseburger, all of his apple slices, and some fries and announced he was tired. I took him up for his nap. Cleo ate 2 of her chicken nuggets, her fries and her apple slices. Roger took her up for her nap.
I went to the gym during the kids’ naps. We got them up and we blew bubbles out back. We had gotten them Crayola color bubbles which was a huge mistake because the color is really pronounced and left marks on our deck. I was able to scrub the color off. We ended up throwing them away because they were too messy. Then we filled their water spray bottles with water and had water fights.
After playing outside for a bit, we had baths, dinner and watched Barbie: A Fairy Secret. It was Cleo’s turn to select the movie. Then bed.
Sunday, May 6, we went to 8am church service. Then to Wal-mart to get the kids a new kiddie pool. Our old 3 foot wide pool has a crack in it. We got them a 4.5 foot pool. We went home and had lunch, then naps. I went to the gym during the kids’ naps. I made elbow pasta for the starch for dinner. I also doctored-up some black eyed peas for me – I have been lax in my protein intake lately. I filled the new pool with water. We got the kids up around 3:30pm. We got them in their bathing suits and we went outside. We brought our old battery powered radio outside. I have had the radio since I lived in Brooklyn. Sidney and I had rocket shaped popsicles. Roger had a grape snow cone. Cleo did not want a frozen treat. Sidney didn’t eat most of his popsicle.
like being sprayed.
The water was super cold. Cleo is fearless. Next time, I will fill the pool while the sun is still shining on the deck so the water has time to be warmed by the sun.
On the important development fronts, Sidney has been eating his dinner and getting dessert for around 10 days in a row. It’s quite impressive. He needs coaching and cheerleading which he asks for by saying, “I need help!” Cleo has not peed in her nighttime pull-up in weeks. She is such a big grown-up 5 year-old. Friday and Saturday nights she sleeps in only her underwear. I think we can start this week with having her sleep in her just her underwear during the week too.
We give them each 30 minutes to finish their dinner. When we tell Sidney he has a certain amount of time left, he looks at the analog clock above the door to the pantry as if to confirm we are correct. Also, when Sidney loses motivation during dinner he will start whimpering and saying, “I’m almost finished” over and over. We agree with him and tell him to keep eating because he’s right, he is almost finished. But he will just cry and repeat that he’s almost finished. Three year-olds are odd.
On February 6, 2012, my company’s wellness committee, of which I am a member, started a weight loss contest. It ended on May 9. Whoever lost 5% of their weight during the 3 months wins a $100 gift card. The gift card can be to various stores and restaurants. One store is Best Buy and that’s the one I will be selected. I weighed in on Monday, May 6 and I lost 7% of my weight!! I was not in the office on May 9 because I was in Nashville, TN for an e-discovery conference. E-discovery is short for electronic discovery. I handle my department’s e-discovery issues. I am zoo happy that I reached the goal and will win a gift card! It’s been a struggle. I am going to get an iPod shuffle because my old one died recently.
Roger got some Entenmann’s chocolate donuts early last week and has had to keep getting them all week because the kids fell in love with them. Sidney favors the chocolate donuts. Cleo likes to have half a chocolate donut and half a glazed or coffee crumb donut. I have wanted to eat a donut all last week. But, I held off knowing that I had to weigh in this week. I will not eat a donut now because I would rather have a cupcake which I will get one day soon. I also find that donuts look a lot better than they actually are.
In light of the kids’ donut eating, we should get a donut cake maker. You put in your own batter and little donut shaped cakes come out. The trick would be to replicate the coffee crumb topping that Cleo likes. But we are in no rush for that.
That said, I do like cinnamon roll donuts – Dunkin Donuts is good as is Quik Trip, a gas station chain here in the south. I do love Krispy Kreme glazed donuts with chocolate frosting. Once a week during the last 3 weeks that I was pregnant with Sidney, I would stop by Krispy Kreme before heading into work and buy 4 donuts. I did not go through the drive-through. I always bought three glazed hot off the press and one glazed with chocolate frosting. I would eat two glazed in the car then eat the other two when I got to work.
I figured that I was so far along in my pregnancy that a little fried dough and sugar couldn’t do any damage to Sidney. He turned out ok. In fact, last night right before dinner he started announcing names that had 2 syllables, e.g., Mommy, Daddy, Sidney, Cleo. We soon realized that for every name he says it has 2 syllables. We explained that some names, e.g., Naomi, has 3 syllables. He will get it eventually. We were impressed that he was trying to apply the concept of syllables.
I also knew that the donut eating would be my last hurrah because after Sidney I was determined to lose the baby weight as well as another 25 pounds. I graduated college weighing around 155 and I have managed to lose and keep off 40 pounds. It’s been a struggle but I am determined to keep the weight off and maintain a healthy weight. I should send in some before and after shots to Shape Magazine! Each month they include inspirational before and after pictures of regular readers.
Have a great week!
