Birthday Preparations

Today is Sidney's birthday celebration. It starts at 10:30am. We plan to get there at 10:15am to set up. I am going to pick up the Thomas the Train cake today at 8am.

We called some people last night who cannot make it to Sidney's party and Sidney kept announcing to them that Cleo was coming to his party. It's sweet that he is happy Cleo is coming. Cleo kept saying, "Sidney, I'm your sister, of course I am coming to your party."

After Sidney's party, Cleo and I are going to her friend Brookelyn's party at Chuck E. Cheese. We got her a Hello Kitty coloring book and a gift card to Target. There were some cute Hello Kitty pajamas at Target but they did have Brookelyn's size. Also, I was relying on Cleo's assertion that Brookelyn loved Hello Kitty (I kept forgetting to call Brookelyn's mom, Erika) to confirm. I figured that most girls like Hello Kitty so it's safe to get a coloring book and Erika can take Brookelyn to pick something out that she likes, just in case Cleo was not correct. Most likely, Cleo was correct but she can embellish the facts occasionally.

Yesterday, Roger got Thomas the Train balloons, plastic forks, cake plates, soda and 100% juice Capri Sun. We had the big plates but not enough cake plates. Right now, 20 kids are confirmed to come. Sidney is going have such a good time seeing his little pals.

When I put Sidney to bed Wednesday night, I was discussing his upcoming birthday party. He told me, "no, it's not my birthday, it's Jamari's birthday." Jamari is one of his classmates. He's not coming to Sidney's party. I corrected him once but he would not be budged from his belief that it was Jamari's and not his own birthday. I gave up.

Sidney has a few dinosaur books that he likes to have us read at bedtime. In one, there are Troodon and Iguanadon dinosaurs. His other books don't feature pictures of those 2 so when he can't find them, he asks, "where's the Troodon? Where's the Iguanadon." The Troodon is rather odd looking in this book. The Iguanadon looks like a typical, big dinosaur. I remind him that the two dinosaurs are in a different book.

On Feb.2, Roger and I took Cleo to her bi-annual pediatric cardiology visit. The little hole in her heart, it's called a patent foramen oval, has gotten a tiny bit smaller. We go again in 6 months. The doctor said that we will want to get it closed up before she starts organized sports. He said that the hole allows red blood to flow into the chamber of her heart devoted to holding blue blood which causes fatigue. If she gets overly-exerted, she can experience extreme fatigue. The surgery involves sending a catheter up her femoral artery and inserting a little device that will go in the hole. Her body will think the device is part of her body and will grow tissue over the device. It is a one-time procedure, it's not like they have to replace the device every 10 years or anything. We will see what her doctor says in 6 months but I would prefer to have it over with than wait. He said that when the surgery is done, the change in energy levels is miraculous and parents joke that they want the surgery reversed because the kids are so newly-energetic.

Cleo was a champ during the 2 hour long doctor visit. We dropped Sidney off at daycare at 7:30am. Cleo's appointment was at 8:30am. Cleo kept worrying that she was going to miss going outside to the playground, having lunch and taking her nap. We assured her that she would be back at daycare in time for all three of those events. She was also worried about missing morning snack time. We told her she would miss snack time but reminded her that we brought her a snack, a berry Pop tart, so she need not fret about that.

Cleo does not nap every day at daycare anymore. I don't notice any difference in the days the naps or does not nap. I worry that she is one of those kids who grows out of their naps. I hope not. But, she's pretty easy. It would be much more difficult if Sidney grew out of his naps because the time he's asleep on the weekend allows me and Roger to get a lot done.

I do not think I can make it to the gym today. I will certainly go tomorrow during the kids' nap. Even though I only go once or twice a week, I have noticed a significant difference in my body. My work pants are much looser. My jeans are not much looser but that's probably because they were rather tight to start with. I have 3 pounds to go before I am at my goal weight. I do around 8 exercises on the leg nautilus machines and 45 minutes of cardio on the stair master, not the step master which is different.

I am a member of my company's wellness committee. On Monday, Feb. 6 we are rolling out a Strive For 5% weight loss program. Participants weigh in the week of Feb. 6, and again the week of May 7. Whoever loses 5% of their weight during those 13 weeks gets a $100 gift card to a small selection of stores/restaurants, e.g., Home Depot, Darden Group (Longhorn Steakhouse, Olive Garden) and Best Buy. I want a Best Buy gift card so I can buy an Amazon gift card. I can then buy more books for my Kindle! I doubt I can lose 5% of my weight during that time because it's taken me since Dec. 7 to lose 3 pounds, which is around 10 weeks. For me to lose 5% of my weight, I would have to lose around 6 pounds. We shall see how I do when $100 is on the line!
